11/11/2022 0 Comments Body heat movie film stills![]() ![]() ![]() New York Times film critic Vincent Canby really liked the film, stating in an Oct. “Body Heat” is good enough to make film-noir play like we hadn’t seen it before. Does he love her, for that matter? Or is he swept away by sexual intoxication–body heat? You watch the movie the first time from his point of view, and the second time from hers. The last scene that works as drama is the one where Ned suggests to Matty that she go get the glasses in the boathouse, and then she pauses on the lawn to tell him, “Ned, whatever you think–I really do love you.”ĭoes she? That’s what makes the movie so intriguing. In a mostly positive review, the great film critic Roger Ebert said: has it ranked somewhat better, with 98 percent on the Tomatometer and 81 percent audience approval. The film is a quality uncredited rehash of Double Indemnity (1944). So he took her to this movie called “Body Heat.” She said, “The Junior Mints were mushy, and the sex was neat. It has been immortalized in a song by none other than Jimmy Buffet in the song “Frank and Lola” 1985. This movie is one of the best Neo-Noirs ever. She is the author of two books, most recently In Lonely Places: Film Noir Beyond the City, and her writing has appeared in Film Comment, Sight & Sound, Cineaste, Reverse Shot, The Criterion Collection, and many other venues.Today on the Classic Movie Reviews Podcast, we are taking on Body Heat (1981). Screening with the Looney Tunes classic RABBIT SEASONING (1952, Chuck Jones), starring Elmer Fudd, Daffy Duck and the irrepressible (and occasionally in drag) Bugs Bunny.įollowed by a conversation with Matt Zoller Seitz and Imogen Sara Smith, a film critic and historian based in New York City. Hurt’s nascent stardom (which kicked off the preceding summer with Altered States) was cemented by this film, which also elevated Turner (in her first leading role), Ted Danson (as Ned’s nerdy, chatterbox best friend, just a year away from starring in Cheers), and a smoldering young whisperer named Mickey Rourke, who has just two brief scenes as an arsonist but tucks the film into his back pocket like a stolen pack of cigarettes. More than one critic at the time noted that it didn’t make a lot of sense for the film’s lead characters to speak in the kind of erotically charged innuendo that was once written to get around censorship, then show them actually having sex, but that’s a big part of what makes the film feel simultaneously knowing and naive, classic and modern. Written and directed by Lawrence Kasdan, a wunderkind filmmaker fresh off co-writing The Empire Strikes Back for George Lucas, and shot and cut by the husband-wife team of cinematographer John Bailey and editor Carol Littleton, BODY HEAT is a marvelous, self-aware continuation of a grand tradition that brings 1940s tropes into the ’80s, pushing hard-boiled attitude right up to the brink of parody. The mark in a film like BODY HEAT always thinks he’s too smart to get rooked by a dame, then finds out otherwise, usually while lying in a pool of his own blood or waiting for the electric chair. In classic noir tradition, Ned is smug enough to think she’s just bantering rather than rendering a value judgment. “You’re not too smart, are you? I like that in a man.” BODY HEAT’s femme fatale Matty Walker (Kathleen Turner) sums up the history of film noir in that statement to Florida lawyer Ned Racine (William Hurt), her target in a plot to murder her rich husband (Richard Crenna) in what looks like an accident, then live off his inherited wealth. Screening as part of our series Movies with MZS, an ongoing program of audience discussions hosted by critic Matt Zoller Seitz. ![]()

It’s fine, but it’s no Finding Dory.A quick review of tonight’s “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” coming up just as soon as this soda is worse than a fruit forward Riesling… However, it just feels like a bunch of recycled plot beats we’ve seen before redesigned ever so slightly. That being said, if you love the energy and unpredictability that the character brings to the mix, you might give this episode higher marks, and that’s completely understandable. While I’ve mostly been a fan of Adrian Pimento appearances in the past, “Pimemento” just doesn’t quite do it for me. It really isn’t given enough time to get too nasty though, and the episode rushes through a half-baked resolution. This opens a Pandora’s box of hate, and all of the co-workers’ resentments and petty grudges come spilling out. Unfortunately, there is a mandatory time limit on these seminars, so the instructor suggests that they practice resolving workplace conflicts with specific Nine-Nine workplace examples. Worst of all? If I’m really being critical, it’s unbelievable that Jake wouldn’t be just as big of a fan of the Pixar movie as everyone else (I’m also not buying that he’s a big No Country For Old Men guy considering what he know about his other tastes). “Pimemento” repeatedly calls attention to its influence with the before-mentioned Memento/ Finding Dory joke, with Jake exacerbated by the fact that no one is familiar with Christopher Nolan’s first feature but only connect short term memory loss with a cartoon character.
